OUR VIEW AND A NEW PERSPECTIVE

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is primarily a congenital developmental disability
characterized with impaired social interaction and language skills and
restricted/repetitive behavior in the toddler period and later in life.
Causes: ASD is caused by a maternal-to-fetal infection and inflammation resulting in
aberrant immune activation, formation of latent reactivatable infections, proinflammatory
microbiome, and disruption of central nervous system. Under “pressure” of continuous
inflammation and infections, these pathologic changes in a child start in the prenatal
period, continue throughout the postnatal period disrupting gene regulation, causing
atypical brain development, changes in other organs, and eventually establishing the
autistic phenotype.
Treatments for ASD should be etiopathogenetic. It includes antiviral, antibacterial, anti-
inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, microbiome-correcting and
neuroprotective therapies. All these treatments for ASD should start as soon as possible
after the diagnosis is confirmed. Initially, it should include medication (non-injectable)
therapy and continues as maintenance with scientifically proven supplements.
