In 2013, Italian programmer Alberto Brandolini formulated an observation that quickly spread far beyond the world of technology:
Originally applied to political discourse, this principle—now known as Brandolini’s Law—describes a deeper human tendency: simple explanations, even when incomplete or incorrect, are far easier to create, repeat, and defend than complex truths.
Medicine is not immune to this phenomenon.
Few areas demonstrate this more clearly than autism.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is traditionally defined as a neurodevelopmental condition marked by social communication challenges and restricted, repetitive behaviors. While research into ASD is extensive, its causes remain mysterious. Many treatment options focus mainly on symptoms. Furthermore, commonly used behavioral and genetic explanations fall short of capturing the disorder’s vast diversity, progression, and varied effects on individuals.
Autism is diagnosed based on behavioral criteria. Yet, what truly causes these behaviors? Behavior reflects the outcome of underlying biological processes, not their origin. This distinction is crucial, as the current diagnostic framework has led to a situation in which classification is often mistaken for explanation.
Building on this distinction, despite the rapid increase in ASD prevalence, no unified etiological model has been established, and therapeutics approaches remain largely focused on behavioral modification rather than biological intervention. This disconnect reflects a broader issue in modern…
